Office of Victims of Crime (OVC)
Welcome to the Office of Victims of Crime. This page is meant to provide you information and resources for those who have been affected by crime.
The OVC Grant is a federal funding program administered by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime. These grants support programs that provide services, advocacy, and resources to victims of crime, with a particular focus on underserved communities, including tribal nations.
🏠 Women's Shelter Update
At this time, there is not an active Women's Shelter in Unalakleet. We are working toward opening a temporary safe shelter by the beginning of September.
This shelter will provide a temporary safe place for individuals experiencing domestic violence or other violent crimes in their home. Please note that it is not intended for permanent housing.
In the meantime:
- If you need a safe place to stay, Bering Sea Women's Group in Nome is available.
- OVC may also be able to help you travel to a safe family member's or friend's home within Alaska.
- If you are a tribal member living outside of Unalakleet and are experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault, OVC may be able to assist with transportation to Unalakleet if you have a safe home here to stay with.
📚 OVC Lending Library
The OVC Program has a variety of books available to borrow! The library is in the OVC Office at the new NVU building, and community members are welcome to stop by during business hours to browse.
Topics include:
- Domestic violence and violence prevention
- Healing from trauma and abuse
- Healthy boundaries and personal growth
- Child safety and parenting
- Bullying and cyberbullying
- Elder abuse awareness
- Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG)
- Online safety, scams, and cybersecurity
- Resources for crime survivors, including male survivors
- Alaska legal resources
- Children's books that promote kindness, inclusion, and safety
Some featured titles include: The Body Keeps the Score, The Courage to Heal, Set Boundaries Find Peace, Highway of Tears, Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe, Joining Forces, Alaska Native Women: Ending the Violence Reclaiming a Sacred Status, Alaska Rules of Evidence, Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Criminal Procedure 2025 Edition, and many more.
